Worth remembering while the logistics play out: the exam itself is two parts and roughly 1 hour 45 minutes.

On test day, students bring their Admissions information, a current photo ID, and three #2 pencils with erasers, in a clear plastic bag. Smart watches, calculators, folders, loose paper, food and water bottles are all prohibited. Only applicants who are testing are allowed in the building.

Here is a fact most prep companies leave off their BCA pages. The official guide says plainly: “Students who take prep courses do not have any advantage over students who do not take a prep course.” BCA also posts a free sample test under “Downloads” on the Admissions site.

We think that statement is accurate about what it is claiming — there is no secret content, no insider question bank, and no course that buys a seat. What preparation actually changes is narrower and more honest:

• Pacing without a calculator. Forty questions in sixty minutes is ninety seconds each, and most middle schoolers have spent two years doing arithmetic on a device.
• Essay structure under a 45-minute clock. The rubric rewards a clear thesis supported by facts from the passage. That is a learnable shape, and it is not what most 8th-grade writing assignments train.
• Familiarity with an unfamiliar format, so the first timed BCA-style test your child sits is not the real one.
• Finding the gaps early enough to fix them. Students get exactly one attempt, in 8th grade — transferring in later is not permitted — so there is no second cycle to correct in.
