When a student chooses a book based on their interest level, then lessons can become more engaging and students will be motivated to read more than once through a novel or series. The key to this strategy is to assist students in choosing books that they will enjoy based on information assessed by the teacher.

The following are a few tips that can be used to help 3 rd grade students choose high-interest books:

- Using their specific Reading Level: Students can be provided with specific reading levels before they select topics; this will provide them with a base level of interest within their reading level. Therefore, if the student chooses a book above his/her level, the student will quickly learn this without addressing their interest level too early.

- Using their Peer’s reading Level: Students can be provided with a list of what their classmates are reading and what grade level they are currently in. Teaching students this information will allow them to understand the level of difficulty/interest in their peer's reading material and guide them toward a similar text.

- Using their Interest Level: Students can be interviewed beforehand to determine interest levels and how they view books. By using these different pieces of information, the teacher will be able to provide the needed for students to choose books that they wish to read.
